Manuel Pellegrini is refusing to to throw in the towel and continues to talk in terms of European qualification. The manager has more troubles than enough but his public proclamations continue to back what insiders claim is his private stance – he is supremely confident things will turn around. While the rest of us sweat, fret and in many cases call for his head the Chilean continues seemingly untroubled and ready to talk of past and present ambitions. It’s difficult to work out whether that is an inspiration to the squad or perhaps unrealistic in our present situation. Saturday is a serious, serious test at the hands of a very good team. Victory would see confidence come soaring back for the next tricky game at Wolves. Defeat would see us head for the midlands with perhaps the manager having one game left should the axe not already have fallen before then. Speaking at his pre-match presser for the Chelsea game he said: “I came here to try to make a step with this club, to try to fight for a European spot. That is my mentality and we continue with that mentality. Of course we had some very good moments last season, we finished the season very well with ten points from twelve, and we started this season very well, so you are always optimistic that you can improve.
