David Moyes Planning to Sign a New Right-Back – But Who Could It Be?

According to insiders, West Ham boss David Moyes could soon be looking to make an important signing, by finding a new right-back for his team. While reports are as yet unsubstantiated, the recent poor performances by two of his players – Johnson and Fredericks, lend credence to the rumour.

If sources are correct, fans can expect to see a new signing imminently, with claims that Moyes has his sights set on 21-year-old Takehiro Tomiyasu, and is ‘desperate’ to hook the talented Japanese defender.

A Sickening Defeat

For fans of West Ham, Saturday 5th September was a disappointing day. Ending in a shocking defeat against Bournemouth, the team’s poor performance was rightly laid at the feet of two players in particular: Ben Johnson and Ryan Fredericks.

For those watching from the sidelines and betting on the outcome of the game, the match offered many twists and turns. It began with a truly shambolic display from Johnson, who spent a mere 20 minutes on the pitch during the game against the Cherries, when it quickly became clear he was more of a liability to the team than an asset.

With Johnson (wisely) side-lined, Ryan Fredericks was called in as his replacement, but he fared little better, making no real dint against the club’s on-pitch rivals. The two players posed an obvious area of weakness for the team, which their competitors took full advantage of.
Indeed, following the game, many pundits were quick to point out that Fredericks may no longer possess a sufficient degree of skill and talent to remain in the Premier League, with the former Fulham man showing little indication of his former brilliance.

What’s interesting is that these deficiencies haven’t come to light sooner, but as has fairly been pointed out, the weakness of the team’s right-back has lately been overshadowed by the well-documented deficiencies of its left-back.

Both clearly need replacing, and fans are now beginning to worry that if this doesn’t happen before the beginning of next season; their team could find itself in a very vulnerable position. This has led to many calls to look for a suitable replacement.

Tomiyasu to the rescue?

While it’s become quite obvious that a new right-back must be found, the question of who would best fit the role is a little more complicated. If sources are to be believed, 57-year-old Moyes is very much aware of the necessity of choosing a replacement, but who that might be is less clear.

While Matty Cash seems to have been a frontrunner, the opportunity to snap up the 23-year-old has already been missed, with Aston Villa getting in there first and laying the offer of a cool £16 million on the table.
Gonzalo Montiel, who has long been suggested, remains an option, as do Bournemouth right-back Adam Smith and Norwich ace Max Aarons. However, a potential lack of funds could prove to be a spanner in the works for acquiring any of these three.

More realistically, there are reports that an offer may already have been made for another player: 21-year-old Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.
If the decision was down to you, who would be your frontrunner for filling the all-important role of right-back?
