Should West Ham Line up Moves for Championship Duo?

West Ham United were one of the surprise packages of the Premier League last season, finishing in sixth place in the table and securing a spot in the Europa League for next term. One of the standout players from the last campaign was Jarrod Bowen.

The Hammers paid £20m to secure the signature of the winger from Championship side Hull City. He impressed from the off with his style of play, but those plaudits increased in the 2020/21 season as he improved the level of his efficiency in the final third.  Bowen scored eight goals and provided the most assists in the team with six to his name.

David Moyes has been renowned for bringing out the best in players with a strong work ethic. Jesse Lingard will no doubt be the club’s primary transfer target after his successful loan spell from Manchester United. However, we could follow the same pathway that brought Bowen to the London Stadium by plucking a star name out of the Championship.

Adam Armstrong (Blackburn)

Armstrong was allowed to leave Newcastle United to join Rovers in the second tier. Looking back, it is a decision that the Magpies will regret. The striker has gone from strength to strength under the tenure of Tony Mowbray, scoring 28 goals last season in the Championship. Only Ivan Toney scored more goals than the 24-year-old, highlighting his prowess in front of goal. Armstrong has a similar build to Bowen in the fact that he is nippy and quick along with possessing a slight frame at 5ft 8in.

He has made strides forward in every campaign that he has played in the Championship, and the time is right for Armstrong to move on. Whether the Hammers should pursue a deal worth £25m for the forward is up for debate. The striker would be a decent compliment to Michail Antonio, although whether you could play him in the same team with Lingard and Bowen would be the question for the hierarchy. However, Armstrong should definitely be considered by Moyes, despite those similarities due to the additional pressures that the Europa League will place on their squad next term.

Arnaut Danjuma (Bournemouth)

Danjuma was exceptional for the Cherries last season, leading their charge towards the playoffs. Jonathan Woodgate’s side ultimately fell short of a return to the Premier League, but they are backed in the Championship betting odds at 10/3 to earn promotion next term. Danjuma’s future will be a key factor in determining whether Bournemouth will remain in the mix. The 24-year-old moved to the club in 2019 in a £13.7m deal from Club Brugge, but failed to make an impact in the Premier League.

It took time for the Dutchman to settle into English football, and he proved his talent with an outstanding season in the second tier. Danjuma tormented defences from the flanks, notching 17 goals for the Cherries in only 35 appearances with a further seven assists. He appears to have the all-around ability to play in the Premier League and relishes the grand stage, scoring twice in the playoffs in his side’s defeat to Brentford. If Woodgate can get top performances out of the Dutchman, then Moyes should be able to bring out his top potential at the London Stadium. The only issue is that they could face competition for his signature.

West Ham have had issues bringing in players from abroad such as Felipe Anderson. But signing either of these two men from the Championship could yield dividends for Moyes and the club next term.
