As the 2021/22 season of the Premier League is fast upon us, we are finally seeing a frenzy of activity among those at the top.
Transfers are taking place at a dizzying pace, with record amounts of money changing hands across the league as teams look to poach top talent from their rivals. However, for us Hammers, it can sometimes feel like we are watching all of this from afar.
After all, West Ham has only signed Alphonse Areola so far, with little indication of anything else on the horizon. We are clearly in need of new talent, but whether we will get it in time is anyone’s guess. With that in mind, let’s focus on the players that we know we have to work with. Here are the ones to watch in the upcoming Premier League.
1. Alphonse Areola
Where better to start than with West Ham’s newest addition? The ace French goalie is on loan from none other than Paris Saint-Germain and is quite possibly one of the top goalkeeping talents in the EPL right now. He’s fresh from recent stints in Real Madrid and Fulham, where he very aptly demonstrated that he’s a goalkeeper at the top of his game. Although he is only at West Ham for a one-season deal, it’s known that the club is already looking into options to buy, despite having never actually played him.
2. Michail Antonio
There’s a reason Michail Antonio has been described as “carrying West Ham’s attack on his shoulders” in recent weeks. Summer friendlies have seen the forward score multiple goals in matches against the likes of Celtic, and let’s not forget the fact that he scored all four goals in his legendary 4-0 win against Norwich last year.
Anyone looking at the latest Premier League betting news will likely see Antonio’s name featuring prominently, as he is one of the top up-and-coming talents in the entire league right now. Management will likely be breathing a sigh of relief that they managed to sign him on for three more seasons, after months of rumours that he was going to play for the Jamaican national squad full-time.
3. Aaron Cresswell
Left-back Aaron Cresswell racked up an impressive 11 assists in the league last season, leading some to speculate that he has been undervalued up until this point (his market value remains a paltry £4.75 million). Alongside fellow teammate and right-back Vladimir Coufal, Cresswell holds the honour of having achieved the highest number of assists for a full-back pairing in the entire 2020/21 season. There’s no indication that Cresswell will be moving on anytime soon, having recently told the BBC that he plans to help West Ham create history in Europe. If his stats are anything to go by, he may well do just that.
These are our players to watch in the 2021/22 season. Although West Ham is currently at an uncertain juncture, the presence of these star players will certainly help improve our chances of making it to the top.
