Will Rio Ferdinand Return to West Ham United

Sam Allardyce is interested in offering Rio Ferdinand a return to the club where he started his career if he does not agree a new contract with Manchester United. The 33-year-old defender, who joined West Ham as a teenager and spent eight years at the club, is in the last year of his contract and is yet to agree a new deal. Questions have been raised about his future after he publicly defied manager Sir Alex Ferguson by refusing to wear a Kick It Out T-shirt last weekend.
Allardyce also hopes the lure of returning to London will help in bringing the centre back to the club. He said: if it’s at the end of the season and he hasn’t got a new contract and he is released by Manchester United, then we would be interested. If he wants to live back in London eventually, which is where he comes from, which you know quite a few players want to do when they come to the end of their careers, that is an advantage for us.
‘It depends on Rio or which other clubs might be interested in him.’ Ferdinand may be in for a hostile reception at Stamford Bridge on Sunday after his family feud with Chelsea captain John Terry but John Mikel Obi expects him to cope with the ordeal.
‘Rio is a big player,’ said Mikel. ‘He knows how to manage himself in games like this. It’s time everything stopped and we all moved on. We have lost sight of the football. There’s a story. It will go away shortly and then we get back to football.’
