The Best Ever Hammers

The Best Ever Hammers It’s been a strange season for Slaven Bilic. After qualifying for the Europa League the past two seasons, his team are now off the pace.

With European footballing nights now a distant memory, and with the controversy surrounding the Olympic Park and want away star man, Dimitri Payet the club is not in a good position.

The Best Ever Hammers

Having gone just over 36 years without a trophy, the current crop and manager have the best chance in a long time to make real progress. A league cup here, an FA cup run there are very realistic targets. Indeed, there is no doubt the players are massively underperforming and things need to change, fast.

To forget about the current issues blighting the club, here are the best ever Hammers players to put on the shirt:

Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano

Arriving together in rather controversial circumstances, looking back they were the signings of the century. Being brilliant servants to the club before eventually moving on to Manchester United and Liverpool, it is quite astonishing to think these fantastic players once graced Boleyn Ground.

Bobby Moore

Bobby Moore is set to be at the centre of a new ITV drama, admittedly, he’s before the time of many West Ham fans but there will be few that have not heard of what a legend he is. The defender played over 500 games for the Hammers winning both the FA Cup and UEFA Winner’s Cup with them.

He captained England to the 1966 World Cup final and it was through his swift reactions and leadership that the Three Lions were able to equalise so quickly.During his 16 years at the club, he won Player of the Year an impressive four times and was runner up for the Ballon d’Or.

Geoff Hurst

Geoff Hurst played alongside Moore for both club and country and is also a West Ham hero. Not only did he score a hat-trick for England in the 1966 World Cup final but he scored 166 goals in his 12 year tenure at the club, including a double hat-trick in an 8-0 thrashing of Sunderland.

Hurst also appeared in several World XI of the Year sides during his time at the club and helped West Ham win the 1964 FA Cup, the 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup and helped them to the League Cup final the following year.

Frank Lampard

Onto more modern times, you can’t not include Frank Lampard as one of the elite. The 38-year-old was one of the best English midfielders of his generation and is very highly decorated to prove it.

He may have not set the world alight with West Ham, but having scored 39 goals in 187 appearances there, there is no denying the Hammers helped to kick off what turned out to be a very successful career.

Paulo Di Canio

Paolo Di Canio may be known as a bit of a temperamental character and an absolute mad man to say the least but he was one of a kind in terms of talent.

The Italian played for West Ham from 1999-2003 and will always be remembered by the Hammers, and that feeling is a teo-way streak as the forward sports a West Ham tattoo on his left arm. The forward scoring 49 goals in 125 matches, quite an incredible record.

Di Canio also won the FIFA Fair Play Award during his time at the London club after shunning a goal-scoring opportunity to stop play upon noticing Everton goalkeeper Paul Gerrard was seriously injured.
