Premier League Football Familes seem to flourish on the Pitch
Football Families
Being a professional footballer is considered one of the toughest careers to get into at the moment. With the amount of competition for limited places, the football odds are not in the favour of anyone wanting to be a professional footballer. The amount of hard work and dedication required to make it to the very top of the game means that players have to dedicate themselves to it for the majority of their playing careers. The players that do make it end up having a very successful playing career and in some cases, so do their children. Although ‘football families’ don’t occur that often, those that do end up being somewhat successful.
Peter & Kasper Schmeichel
At the moment, Peter & Kasper Schmeichel are probably the most famous example in recent memory of a successful footballer ‘passing on’ his skills to their child. The Great Dane was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his playing career, winning numerous trophies and individual rewards. Although Kasper hasn’t reached the same heights as his father, he has managed to solidify himself as a very solid Premier League goalkeeper and managed to win a Premier League title with Leicester in the 2015/16 season.
Paul & Tom Ince
Tom Ince, son of Paul Ince, is another footballer who has followed in his father’s footsteps to play ‘the beautiful game’. Paul Ince had a distinguished career, playing for clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, and Inter Milan, as well as becoming the first black player to captain the England national team. Tom, however, has not managed to replicate his Dad’s success so far. Although he started off his professional career at Liverpool, Tom has spent the majority of his career in the Championship. Despite not reaching the heights that his Dad did, at 25 there is still time.
Danny & Daley Blind
Current Manchester United player and Holland international, Daley Blind, has also followed his father into football. In the 80s and 90s, his father was solid centre back for Ajax and the national team. Daley has followed in his steps by racking up over 102 appearances for Ajax before making a £13.8 million switch to Manchester United. Throughout his career, he has solidified himself a solid, versatile player. Although he has yet to win a Champions League like his father, Daley has still managed to win numerous trophies with Ajax and Manchester United.
Sir Alex & Darren Ferguson
It’s not just on the pitch where the kids have followed their parents into football. Although both Sir Alex and Darren Ferguson were both footballers, they have made their name in the management side instead. Sir Alex Ferguson has an unprecedented managerial record, winning numerous with Manchester United, including a spectacular record. He is also regarded as one of the best managers of all time. Unsurprisingly Darren hasn’t managed to come anywhere near his father’s record, but he has achieved some success during his career, most notably during his stints at Doncaster and Peterborough. Although he hasn’t managed to win a treble, Darren’s greatest achievement is his double promotion with Peterborough – taking them from League 2 to the Championship in two seasons.
Harry & Jamie Redknapp
From all of the examples mentioned, it seems that in the majority of ‘football families’ the parent has had more success in the game. However, you could argue that with Harry Redknapp and Jamie Redknapp, it is the opposite. Although Harry Redknapp did have a decent playing career, it was his son Jamie who had a far more successful career. The majority of his career was spent at Liverpool where he was signed for £350,000 – making him one of the most expensive teenagers at the time.
