West Ham’s revival continues to gather pace as they produced a battling performance to hold a strong Chelsea team to a goalless draw on Sunday.
They have now taken four points from their last two games to climb up to 17th in the table, easing the pressure on Manuel Pellegrini.
A first clean sheet of the season should give the defence a huge confidence boost, particularly as they shut out a rampant Eden Hazard. The Hammers could even have taken all three points had Michail Antonio and Andriy Yarmolenko been more clinical, so they should go into another tricky period full of optimism.
Next up West Ham face Man Utd at home, Brighton away, Tottenham at home and then Leicester on the road.
If you check the odds at the top bookmakers listed on OddsMarket you will see that the Hammers are clear underdogs in all four games. It is a hazardous fixture list, full of potential banana skins, but after getting a result against Chelsea the players will be emboldened. Declan Rice performed admirably in the midfield, screening the defence well, and that bodes well for the future.
“It was a good point against the leaders and a team that scored 14 goals in the first five games,” said Pellegrini after the game.
West Ham had just 22% of the possession, but the Chilean coach said that was part of the game plan, praising his players for a tactically astute performance and some solid defending. It was a tight game, and he correctly noted that the Hammers had two clear chances to win it, whereas Chelsea had just one.
“We would prefer to have some more possession, but it was a good tactical game and at least we did not lose it,” said Pellegrini.
Marko Arnautovic was missing, so West Ham lacked a bit of spark and creativity going forwards, and they should improve on that front when he returns. Punters that like betting on the Hammers are often more inclined to go overs on the total goals market when the Austrian forward is in the team, as he unsettles the opposition with his dynamism and unpredictability. Overs is typically a strong bet when approaching a West Ham game, because they typically defend chaotically but offer something in attack. Yet that may change if Rice maintains his strong form and West Ham defend so diligently.
