West Ham Vs Burnley: Tactical analysis

Burnley started with the 4 5 1 that they have been using for most of this season to great effect, this changed to a 6 3 1 when they defended as the full backs dropped in as two extra centre backs with the wingers covering in their place. When they lost the ball every player except Chris Wood was behind the ball and they were keeping a very tight shape. While when they attacked they tended to hit…

Defence of a Noble Man

I feel the need to defend a Noble man. Mark Noble limped out of the pre-season friendly Saturday against Werder Bremen with an ankle injury, that though did not dampen the twitterrati attack on him by many West Ham fans for his performance in the first half of the 2-2 draw in Germany, many who it seems have short memories. No player should just be picked to play for the team on merit, but for me Noble if fit, should be the…

Ten-Men Hammers Earn Draw In Thriller

A spirited Hammers side fought-back from losing positions three-times yesterday evening to earn a hard-fought draw in the penultimate friendly of pre-season against Altona 93. 100th Anniversary of the Passchendaele Battle: The West Ham players we lost

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Passchendaele battle during the Great War of 1914-1918. Passchendaele is located in Belgium just across the border from France, and the Germans were entrenched there. Torrential rain turned the battlefields into mud swamp land, where not only did the soldiers have to contend with the shells and bullets from the opposition trenches, but get caught off the marked out tracks, you could be sucked into the mud. Approximately over 270,000 British soldiers alone…

Where Are They Now?: Jack Collison

Many Hammers will remember the name Jack Collison as one of the brightest young West Ham players in the last couple of decades, but how did he have his career cut-short? And where is he now? The former Welsh international joined our Academy at the age of 17 in 2005 and would make his Hammers debut just two-years later at The Emirates Stadium on New Year’s Day 2008. Where are they Now? Unsung Cup Heroes of the 70’s

Alan Taylor 1974-1979 The 1975 FA Cup final hero was signed from Rochdale a year earlier. Taylor scored two goals in the quarter final, the semi final and the final helping West Ham secure one of their three FA Cup wins. Taylor’s career with West Ham was somewhat hampered by injury and was finally sold by the Hammers moving to Norwich in 1979 for £90,000. Sadly, Taylor got injured in just his fourth game for…

Do West Ham really need a Hart?

“You want a heart. You don’t know how lucky you are not to have one,” said the Wizard of Oz. As the news circulates of our recent loan signing of Joe Hart, I wonder if he’ll be an upgrade on the two goalkeepers we already have. Adrian and Randolph didn’t have great seasons last year, but who did in the claret and blue? Hart isn’t exactly coming off the back of his best season …

Hart deal mooted & more striker frustrations

Pre-season The team have returned for pre-season training and are currently camped in Austria under what one imagines is a new fitness regime courtesy of our new head coach Gary Lewin. This hopefully does not involve the wearing of leder hosen and the slapping of thighs. Despite speculation to the contrary it would appear that perma-crock Andy Carroll is with the squad, though it’s possible that the Big Man may well be in “recovery” …

Worst XI: Centre Midfield

Radoslav Kovac 2009-2011 50 Apps Kovac signed initially on loan from Spartak Moscow in January 2009, Kovac impressed with his combative style and was signed permanently in August 2009. Unfortunately for both the player and the club this was a time when West Ham were recovering from the Icelandic owners gamble and were between the Zola/ Grant era’s. Kovac was extremely slow in every sense, slow in thought and movement so much so that a group of fans nicknamed him “Ron” after…
