What’s that? Manchester City led a game at half-time and went on to win? Are you sure? I thought they had soft mentalities and all that? And was it even worth Manchester United even breaking a sweat last week, Jose? Yes, the …

Newcastle United will do everything in their power to end their “unbearable” sequence of derby defeats to arch-rivals Sunderland on Sunday, manager Steve McClaren has written in an open letter to fans. “The atmosphere is always incredible and I think unique to the North East, and we have to go there, stand up and be counted.” Some extra spice is added to what is always a hugely passionate Tyne-Wear derby following the recent appointment of former…

West Bromwich Albion recorded their first home win of the season in a typical encounter between two sides managed by Tony Pulis and new Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce. Although certainly not a game for footballing purists, there were some promising features to take out of the game for West Brom fans as the Baggies look to press on and climb higher up the table. Firstly, my, and indeed the seemingly unanimous, man of the match was Stephane Sessegnon.

Come the end of this utterly absorbing contest, any doubts over West Ham’s capacity to score goals had disappeared, yet what remains real enough is the sense that this is a club in serious danger of being relegated. • Part 1: Arsenal to Manchester City Manchester United – Shaun O’Donnell – Observer reader 6/10 This was always going to be a transition season regardless of us being champions. Moyes knew the lack of quality in midfield needed addressing but left it until the last day of the transfer window and bought a player who he played further up the pitch. That our best midfielder has been a 40-year-old winger speaks volumes. Moyes seems to have handled Rooney well and he has carried …

Moyes’s momentum, time for plan B at Fulham and a mid-table clash at the Etihad are just some of things to look forward to West Ham struggling for strikers Anyone with a passing knowledge of West Ham United knew that starting the season with Andy Carroll as their only striker – we’ll not be counting Modibo Maïga, thank you very much – was asking for trouble. But Sam Allardyce went ahead and put all his eggs in one basket anyway and, surprise, surprise, …
